Yachting 101

A yacht, simply put, is a boat used for pleasure or racing. As you will see from the yachts available for charter through Abiego, however, the definition does not begin to describe what a yacht really is. For those unfamiliar, we describe some basic yacht and charter terms that may be helpful as you navigate the site.

There are two main categories of yachts: sailing yachts and power motored yachts. There are several variations of sailing yachts:

  • A monohull has one main frame or body (hull) and is your typical sailboat

  • Multi-hull sailboats include:

    • Catamarans with two parallel hulls

    • Trimarans- three hulls

Megayacht is a general term to describe the largest, most powerful and elite yachts with the most lavish amenities. The ultimate in luxury yachting.

Just as there are different types of yachts, there are different staffing and package options. The most popular choice is the all-inclusive crewed charter. You will enjoy a captain and fully staffed crew, including a chef to prepare all of your meals. Food, beverages and water sports typically are included in the all-inclusive package. Staffing variations include “captain-only” or “bareboat,” meaning no captain or crew. Variations in the package involve paying for all expenses. Please be aware that a 10% to 15% gratuity for the crew is customary at the conclusion of your charter.
