Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is the generic term given to a group of island and mainland countries between India, China and Japan.  The region is marked by tropics, volcanoes, rainforest, ricefields, and coral reefs.  Maritime Southeast Asia is made up of Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.  The Mainland countries are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.  The sailing highlights of Southeast Asia include Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines (Myanmar currently has a boycott on tourism issued by its democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi).

The most popular destination in Southeast Asia is Thailand along the Isthmus of Kra, which boasts some of the world’s best beaches.  The island of Phuket (poo-ket) off Thailand is a popular yachting ground for sailing and power yachts alike.   Malaysia also has pristine beaches, excellent diving, and inland hikes through scenic national parks.  East Malaysia shares the island of Borneo with part of Indonesia and the Sultanate of Brunei, one of the world’s last princely states.

Indonesia, from the island of Sumatra in the west, spans nearly 3,100 miles of beautifully landscaped volcanic islands.  Most of the countries more than 220 volcanoes remain active.  The country boasts a plethora of beaches, diving opportunities and anchorages, along with a huge diversity of tribal cultures.  The whole archipelago could consume a lifetime of sailing, but the most popular destinations are Sumatra, Java, Bali and Lombok.

The Philippines archipelago in the southeast is made up of more than 7,000 islands and hosts a multitude of the spectacular beaches for which Southeast Asia is known.  The Philippines offer the most dramatic diving spots of the region and many scenic volcanic hikes.
